In the Upper Bavarian "Walderlebniszentrum" (Center for forest experience) Schernfeld, the forest is the center of attention under the motto "Experience the Forest". On the adventure trail, the sensory trail, the stalking trail and the school trail, visitors are led into the heart of the forest. In addition to information about the forest, they can also find action, excitement, games and fun, and even spend the night in rustic huts.
In 2022, the Bavarian Forestry Administration built a new building for the forest education operation at the Walderlebniszentrum, which includes seminar and business rooms as well as offices and, in accordance with its name, is intended to bring visitors closer to the forest ecosystem. In accordance with this educational mission, the premise was to erect an ecological building using timber construction methods. The result was a solid wood building made of cross-laminated timber and glulam ceiling system elements paired with a post-and-beam facade and ecological insulating materials. The architectural language of the low and reduced building impresses with clear forms and sharp edges. The seminar room has an appealing and inspiring room height and cantilevers towards the forest to create a stronger connection to it.
The HASSLACHER group supplied around 60 m³ of 100 mm thick, three- and five-layer cross laminated timber wall elements in visible quality. In addition, around 70 m³ of 120 to 180 mm thick design and acoustic elements with a correspondingly profiled soffit, executed as a glulam ceiling system, were used. This element not only creates improved room acoustics, but is also characterized by a clear and linear design language.
